Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation Honors Stony Point Boy

West Haverstraw, NY (July 6, 2021) – The Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation honored 9 year old Peter Greene of Stony Point, NY for his donation to the Foundation in support of the patients and staff of Helen Hayes Hospital.

Amidst a pandemic, young Peter knew that people around him needed help. The nine year old wanted to do something for his community, which was suffering. He thought especially of the patients at nearby Helen Hayes Hospital, as COVID precautions had prevented people around the globe from being with their loved ones. He particularly thought about these patients as they faced spending the holidays without their friends and families.

Peter Greene, remembering a recent lesson in school about acts of kindness, collected money and made a donation to Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation inside this handmade card (please see attached). “We were so impressed by Peter’s thoughtfulness and generosity,” said Hilda Kogut, chairperson of the foundation. “With so much bad news in the past year, it was wonderful to see such an act of kindness. Now that pandemic restrictions are beginning to ease, we can finally come to his home to thank Peter and his family in person.”

Kogut further explained, “People are admitted to Helen Hayes Hospital with a need to rebuild their lives following catastrophic injuries, debilitating surgeries and chronic disabling illnesses. The hospital staff have been helping patients do that for over 100 years. Peter’s donation helps to support both the staff and the patients perform the miracles that happen at the hospital every day.”

Peter’s mother Lea Greene was touched by Peter’s generosity and helped to facilitate his desire to make a donation. “It has been a very difficult year and a half for Peter, so I jumped at the chance to bring some joy into his life by helping others. I’m not sure if his idea to donate was sparked by something they talked about at school, but he is a generous and caring kid with a really big heart. What a wonderful way to demonstrate his caring nature than to make a donation of his own money to a hospital that helps so many people rebuild their lives.  We are so very proud of him.”

Peter takes this all in stride. When asked why he wanted to make the donation, Peter responded, “I just thought it was a nice thing to do.”
