Herbert & Edythe Kurz Accessible Playground

Herbert and Edythe Accessible Playground

The Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation and Helen Hayes Hospital have officially opened the Herbert and Edythe Kurz Accessible Playground.  Located on the campus of the physical rehabilitation hospital in West Haverstraw, this new playground has been made possible by a grant from the Kurz Family Foundation of Piermont, New York.

The Herbert and Edythe Kurz Accessible Playground offers traditional and adapted equipment modified to accommodate children with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. The playground incorporates features such as wide spaces and pathways for easier maneuvering and wheelchair access, ADA seating and safety surfaces.

Traditional parks are difficult if not impossible to enjoy if a child uses a wheelchair or even a crutch.  Play is important for all children and this new playground has the added therapeutic benefits as a part of the pediatric programs available to children at Helen Hayes Hospital.

The Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation is thankful to Leonard Kurz. A Director of the Kurz Family Foundation and internationally recognized children’s rights advocate, for making the hospital’s vision of building an accessible playground a reality.
